Human Rights Conference at UCONN

Brenna, Rachel Y, Tess and Mr. Jannke attended this human rights conference at UCONN on Friday. It was simply amazing. We sat in on a session about the photograph in activism. We were treated to lunch and listened to the keynote speaker, Aryeh Neier (Open Society Foundation). He is the father of the modern human rights movement, which started in the 1970s. We'll tell you all about our incredible experience on Thursday!

One Book One Region

Amnesty members help with the One Book One Region kickoff event at the Mystic Arts Center. Born and raised in Connecticut, Connor Grennan began traveling the world. His stop in Nepal led him to his future, which included writing this year's OBOR selection, Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal. Amnesty members helped set up the kickoff event on May 28 and had Mr. Grennan sign their books. Look to our Library Media Center for more information on how to get a copy of the book. Amnesty and the LMC plan to invite Mr. Grennan to visit LHS in the fall, so stay tuned. More info at onebookoneregion.org.

Assembly Wednesday May 22

During AIM 60 on Wednesday there will be an assembly in the auditorium for most of the school. (Several advisories are participating in a survey instead.)

LHS class of 1987 alumna Beth Brundage Murphy and her work will be the focus. Beth is a very successful documentary filmmaker and she will show us clips from her latest project, What Tomorrow Brings.

What Tomorrow Brings is about the extremely complicated issue of educating girls in Afghanistan. Beth returned from filming earlier this month and LHS will be the first to see her footage.

Beth was a girl from Ledyard...
